Polishing Silver Using Toothpaste

Apply white (not gel) toothpaste to silver items and rub with an old soft bristled brush.  Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.

Polishing Large Pieces of Silver

For larger pieces of silver, make a paste of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) and water and rub in with a sponge.  Rinse with hot water and buff dry with a soft cloth.

Cleaning Decanters Using Vinegar

White vinegar left in the decanter overnight should help to cut through really tough stains.

Cleaning Decanters Using Rice

Half fill the decanter with warm soapy water (preferably something like Ecover which has less harsh chemicals), fill with 3 tablespoons of dry, uncooked rice, and swirl around until the stains are gone. This can be rinsed and repeated if the stains are stubborn.

Cleaning Decanters Using Bicarbonate of Soda

A mixture of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), water and rock salt swirled gently round the decanter will lift the stains out with a mild abrasive action.

Cleaning Crystal Decanters

To clean glass or crystal decanters, add one denture cleaning tablet to the decanter filled with water and leave for several hours or overnight.  Rinse well with luke warm water and allow to air dry.
